Inactivity may increase risk of breast cancer, study shows

A new study found that thousands of cancer cases may have been avoidable, as they could have developed due to inactivity and prolonged sitting, according to Fox News.

Thousands of cases were blamed for lack of physical activity in various cancers - including prostate, colon and ovarian - but breast cancer had the highest number of cases at 49,000 in total, according to the media outlet.

"This gives us some idea of the cancers we could prevent by getting people to be more active," epidemiologist Christine Friedenreich of Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Canada, told the news source. "This is a conservative estimate. The more physical activity you do, the lower your risk of these cancers."

Friedenreich's next step is to delve into why exercise can reduce cancer risk, the news provider reports.

According to the American Cancer Society, this disease is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following lung cancer. However, the death rate has been decreasing since 1990 due to advancements in research and breakthroughs in breast cancer news. There are currently 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.
